The Kalama Incident

Vietnam-era veterans Rick Kennedy and Dave Hooker have dropped out from productive society and are working as forest service rangers in Washington's Cascade Range. On a snowy October afternoon, they are sent out to rescue two overdue hikers. They find Julie Sullivan and Carolyn Young just in time to save the two women from certain death from hypothermia. It is too late in the day to walk out and the storm prevents helicopter rescue, so they pitch camp and stay the night. When they awaken the next morning, they are somewhere else.

The adventurers battle catatonic villagers and neo-Nazi mountaineers before they are befriended by Asotin, who leads them up the mountain peak Kalama in search of passage home. During the cross-country trek, the relationships among the adventurers evolve as their experiences migrate toward commonality.

Read the first two sample chapter, "A Walk in the Wild" and "All in a Day's Work," and draw your own picture of the Washington Cascades in October. The third sample chapter is an example of the Vietnam flashbacks recounted by both rangers during the adventure.
